Solution-Focused?

Solution-Focused Coaching, the modality we practice here, arose out of "solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT)" a counseling approach that was first developed in the 1950s by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, and which is commonly used today.  Therapists realized that the more often clients talked about their problems and the causes behind them, the more entrenched these issues could become. To prevent this, therapists began to shift their focus away from the problem, and towards finding and implementing a solution.  Solution-focused coaches ask questions to help clients clarify a goal or desired state they hope to achieve.  Next, time is spent thinking through what it will feel like and how things will be different when that goal is reached.  Finally, the coach helps the client arrive at some action items to take steps toward the goal.  Each session begins with a review of the action items, and proceeds from there.  There's much more to it than that, of course, but in a nutshell, this is what we mean when we speak of solution-forcused coaching.

Goal.
Current Reality.
Options (or Obstacles).
Will (or Way Forward).

The GROW model was originally developed in the 1980s by business coaches Graham Alexander, Alan Fine, and Sir John Whitmore. A good way of thinking about the GROW Model is to think about how you'd plan a journey. First, you decide where you are going (the goal), and establish where you currently are (your current reality). You then explore various routes (the options) to your destination. In the final step, establishing the will, you ensure that you're committed to making the journey, and are prepared for the obstacles that you could meet on the way.
